Partner: Destination Arctic Circle - Qeqqata Municipality, Greenland
Date: 2024
Assistance Areas: International Planning, Trail Design, Arctic Landscapes, Wayfinding, Wilderness Recreation, Technical Assistance
Provided on-the-ground technical assistance in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Interior – International Technical Assistance Program (DOI-ITAP) to support trail system development in Greenland’s Arctic backcountry. The effort focused on enhancing connectivity with the Arctic Circle Trail (ACT), a 165-kilometer (103-mile) wilderness route between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut. Collaborated with the municipal trails program to scout and mark two new trail connections from Kangerlussuaq to the ACT, enabling a primarily off-road experience for long-distance hikers. Helped improve wayfinding system, streamlined mapping workflows, and advised on signage and loop trail options. Conducted a full trail reconnaissance of the Sarfannguit Nunaat area in the UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and provided recommendations on feasibility, visitor safety, and cultural site interpretation. Co-developed a new 21-kilometer loop trail near Sisimiut connecting to the popular UFO Trail, identifying infrastructure needs and establishing a long-term wayfinding marker maintenance plan. The project advanced trail access, sustainable recreation, and capacity building within Greenland’s growing outdoor tourism sector.
Partner: Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy (SWMLC)
Date: 2021–2022
Assistance Areas: Nonprofit, Trail Planning, Site Design, Ecological Resources, Community Engagement
Supported trail planning through one of the world’s largest freshwater dune systems along the western shore of Lake Michigan near South Haven, Michigan. The project focused on linking four ecologically significant properties—Pilgrim Haven, Porter Legacy Dunes, Van Buren State Park, and Syndicate Park Dune Area—via the proposed Legacy Dune Trail. Collaborated with SWMLC and advised a master’s project team from the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) to develop trail concepts that protect sensitive dune ecosystems while improving public access and connectivity. The team conducted ecological and cultural resource assessments, engaged local stakeholders, and produced a detailed site design for SWMLC's Pilgrim Haven Natural Area. The resulting trail master plan advanced a shared regional vision for connected conservation, directly informing updates to the Van Buren State Park Management Plan and enabling successful fundraising for initial trail construction. In parallel, developed a best practices guide for freshwater dune trail design based on insights from National Park Service trail managers.
In 2022, SWMLC received a $100,000 grant from Entergy Corporation to initiate design and development of the Legacy Dune Trail. In 2024, local partners secured a $300,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant for construction of the first phase, with additional support from private donors and Visit South Haven. The total project cost for the trail and boardwalk system is estimated at approximately $925,000.
Partner: Lower Brule Sioux Tribe
Date: 2024-2025
Assistance Areas: Trail Planning, Cultural Resources, Restoration, Regional Connectivity
Partnered with the Cultural Resources Department of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe to restore and expand the trail system at the Narrows Historical Interpretive Area, a culturally significant landscape overlooking the Big Bend of the Missouri River. The project involved assessing weathered and eroded trails and structures, developing sustainable design solutions for stairs, drainage, and erosion control, and envisioning a regional trail network connecting to Wata Onazin and the future Lake Sharpe Trail. Researched and compiled a resource of appropriate funding sources and provided cost estimates for phased restoration and construction.
Partner: Great Plains Trail Alliance (GPTA)

Partnered with the Great Plains Trail Alliance to advance planning and implementation of a 2,200-mile non-motorized long-distance trail connecting existing trails and low volume roads from Canada to Mexico. Focused efforts on the 350-mile “Pilot Trail” segment between Scotts Bluff National Monument in Nebraska and Bear Butte State Park in South Dakota, contributing to collaborative partner development, route development, mapping technology, signage planning, and public outreach. The project promotes outdoor recreation, stewardship of prairie landscapes, and regional economic development.
